HD VIN Number Decoder. Although the Harley Davidson VIN number decoder provides the results in a few seconds, let's consider a few symbols from the code and their meaning. The first three characters always identify the manufacturer of the bike. The typical beginning of the code can be 1HD where 1 stands for the USA and HD stands for Harley. Locating the Harley VIN Prior to 1961 On Harley models prior to 1961, the engine number acts as the VIN. This number can be found on the left side engine case. Harley models produced prior to 1969 do not carry any frame number. VIN Numbering Conventions: First two numbers are the model year. Letters (up to four) are the model designation. The vehicle identification number (VIN) is the identifying code for a SPECIFIC vehicle. The Harley VIN serves as the vehicle’s fingerprint, as no two vehicles in operation have the same VIN. A Harley VIN is composed of 17 characters (digits and capital letters) that act as a unique identifier for the vehicle.
With that number on the case it is an electric start case( doesn't matter if it is kick only at this point) which began with the '65 Panhead Electra-Glide. the case originally had two ears on the clutch side which bolted to the inner primary. They may or may not still be there. The case was used through the seventies until the change for the cow pie top. Depending on the actual year used it could have one of two mainshafts, the '65-'69 mid shaft or the '70 up long one for alternator use. All -65 cases have a vented screw so don't bother looking for other types of vents. It will also have a smooth bottom with no centering lugs for location in the tranny plate and no provision for an adjuster screw. How long is the shaft coming out of the main drive gear? That will tell you if it is pre or post '70. And it doesn't matter which kicker cover is on it as it has likely been changed. Top as well since either a ratchet top or handshift top will fit it.

How to Find the Vehicle’s VIN Number?

Here are some common VIN locations on the car:

- Door frame (left-hand inner wheel arch)
- Driver’s side door (near door jamb)
- Some cars may have it on the firewall, steering wheel, and radiator support bracket.
How to Decode the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)?
Tap into the wealth of data available on millions of vehicles. Each vehicle gets a fixed ID number in the production line called VIN. It is the most reliable way to get vehicle information. Databases managed by auto makers and US vehicle registration agencies carry the VINs. VinCheck.info works with these entities to update vehicle information into its own database.
Each section of the VIN has a different meaning. It is based on 1979 and 1980 ISO standards. Please refer to the diagram below for the matching value of each character or section.
According to the Society of Automotive Engineers, Code of Federal Regulations, the VIN has seven sections describing the following:
- where the vehicle was built (1st character)
- who made the vehicle (2nd and 3rd characters)
- basic description (4th to 8th characters)
- whether the VIN was authorized (9th character)
- model year (10th character)
- where the vehicle was assembled (11th character)
- serial number (12th to the 17th characters)
Flexible fuel vehicles can be identified by the 2nd, 3rd and 8th characters.

What is VIN Cloning
Not all VINs accurately represent a car’s true identity. A car may have a VIN that actually belongs to another car. VIN cloning is a crime that involves replacing the VIN of a stolen car or a car with a bad history with the VIN of another car of the same model and make. Its goal is to misrepresent or hide the identity and history of a car usually offered for sale. First, the factory-installed VIN plate is pried off and then replaced with a legitimate VIN. With fake ownership documents, the car with the cloned VIN can be easily registered in another state.
Here are the red flags that can point to VIN cloning: Nxp nearfieldproximity provider driver.
